Rahul Dravid's decision: Why not rather than why

Rahul Dravid's decision: Why not rather than why

Source: Times of India, 19 Sep 2007

For the sake of the team, Rahul Dravid decided to withdraw from the World Twenty20; for his own sake, in probably a trickier dilemma, he has now sacrificed the extra-special privilege of captaining India too. Both are brave and praiseworthy decisions. After all, in a world run by power-hungry and ambitious individuals, who would give up the country's most high-profile, if not most important, job? Who would opt out just after winning the Holy Grail in cricket - a Test series win in England - anyway? For many, his decision may seem like a shocking one; for those who know him, though, it was the most obvious and one of the easiest calls. Simply because he's probably the only player in the Indian team who believes in the good old philosophy: why not rather than why. "I take great joy in doing whatever I do well," he had told this writer recently in England, with a twinkle in his eye. One didn't know at that time he wasn't enjoying the captaincy though. On Monday, he listed it as the foremost reason for resigning from the job. It falls into place. You can't blame him for feeling that way, though, after just two years in the job. India's captaincy, contrary to the rosy picture, is actually one of the most complicated and unrewarding tasks. India's captain is anyway like a goldfish trapped in a fish bowl: exposed and with nowhere to hide. The messy system makes his life that much tougher: the selectors treat him as an enemy, team-mates as a scheming pawn, and fans as a punching bag. He has absolutely no friends on the pitch or off it. Worse, the board neither grooms him for the job nor protects him when the going gets rough. The problems start at the first stage itself when the team is selected: the captain doesn't have a vote or much say but faces all the flak for a defeat. On the field, he has to keep thinking on his toes and even stay two steps ahead of the game. It's very easy to strategise and criticise, as Dravid himself said so frostily, sitting in the comforts of the dressing room. And then, after the match, there's the post-mortem too. The bigger calls and decisions (batting or bowling first; time of declaration, etc) may be taken by the team management but the captain is the one who has to stand in front of the firing squad. Dravid probably dislikes all this more than the idea of captaining itself. The BCCI will do well to understand the attrition rate of its captains. Because, before Dravid, the country's most successful captain Sourav Ganguly was thrown out of the team in disgrace; before him, Sachin Tendulkar hung up his thinking cap with tears in his eyes; even before that, Mohammed Azharuddin was vilified even though match-fixing evidence couldn't be found against him. Dravid, at least, is going away from captaincy on a high. Among other things, it is perceived his own form has dipped (even though only marginally in Tests) and he wants to recover it. Most hang on to the job because it gives them extensive media coverage (which translates into bigger money), lots of power over his own mates too and, in some cases, the licence to stay on in the team even while not performing. Dravid clearly doesn't belong to that school. In recent years, he has emerged as the strongest and tallest pillar in the squad. He knows he has to score runs in heaps for Team India to stay on a winning roll. And he doesn't want to forsake that for anything. He'd rather be the best batsman in the side than an okay captain and an okay batsman. How many people can think so far and so selflessly?

Confused Mastero

We had been living on a knife-edge ever since Mr.Laddu served his invention “The Uppittu” last year. But now, it seems the history has repeated itself “Ek saal baadh”…………

Once again our lives went under the knife edge,
Once again we cheated death,
Once again our a** went on fire,
Once again we got to beg for our lives,
And once again we survived,
When we tasted it, AGAIN!!

Uppittu – Reinstalled
-Come taste it, AGAIN!!

Long ego as we all know, my roommates had been through a nightmare, after that they were living a peaceful life so far. They were happy with all cuisines made by Mr. Laddu as he stopped experimenting things, but now, it seems somebody else has stepped into Mr. Laddu’s Shoes and claims to be a “Dangerous Chef”………

This is none other than our Confused Maestro Veeru………..

As usual, I was in my office and as expected I got a phone call from……..yes your rite, Fuggi. In a very dull voice he said, “Matte Uppittu appa, I think its kind of Uppittu Part 2. However, we managed to survive, Again!!” I was shocked, I couldn’t believe him, coz I never thought anybody would dare to prepare Uppittu sequel. In fact no one can do it again, repeats Ravi’s Marvelous Mistake (Marvelous – Ravi thinks Uppittu was delicious and I think it was his one huge Mistake of pouring in loads of salt…….).

As soon as I got to know about this brave stunt (surviving dangerous Uppittu) performed by my roommates, I started to think about the kind environment and emotions exhibited in my room. I always thought Veeru as a “Man with no words, a sentence with a blank which always remains as a blank”. But its seems wrong, Veeru is like Chaltha pirtha “BARRON’s book” (Remember that “GRE book“– A Bible for all of us while search for dream job and of course not now)…that’s because when I started advertising this junk story, he literally got pissed off as was Laddu earlier and he immediately bombarded me with SMSes with absolutely no blanks. Following is one of the text message sent to me……

“Veeru is really stumped with this lewd comments on his Uppittu, but really pity on those pity victims who didn’t mind 2 lick d utensils, ASKIN 4more, should I consider this as remark bolt in my bright carrier as Chef or sum jerks pissed of my rising popularity or should turn my back 4 these detractors. Well Veeru is aware tat the world out there is really bad. So He’s UNFAZED about this. Whole make up story. Better seek your made up victims for more clarity………”

After reading this message I felt like “Ye Mu Se Nahi Haath Se Baat Kartha hai” (Old film dialogue meant for action Heroes, who just go n beat villains black n white without speaking a single word), but in case of Veeru it’s different “Veeru speaks with his hands not from his mouth”. Veeru is well versed in writing well crafted SMSes that’s it, Hence the proof…hehehe,

I also wondered why the hell text messaging is called SMS(Short Messaging Service), when people like Veeru can possibly cover a 3.5 hrs movie “Jodha Akbar” in a single SMS with all action, emotions and drama…………….…wait, wait I think I am distracting you guys. Now leave Aish n Hrithik alone, and come back to Uppittu 2, …………..Can any one guess what made Veeru to torture our sweet little Dino (Fuggi) and others……..

I know that, because Veeru being a VTU guy, he lived up to that i.e. VTU – V Torture U kind of attitude and have you guys heard to Uppi’s song from one of his movie, which goes something like “Uppigintha Ruchi Bere illah, Oppi konndavanu daddhanallah……..”….I think Veeru listened to only this line repeatedly and caused this whole blunder…………………

Veeru, Ruchi ge takkastu Uppu haku maga, don’t think “Uppigintha Ruchi bere illah antha”……

I think my roommates have learnt a lot from previous experience, they din’t even left a peace of uppittu in the utensil, they just managed to drop that in all corners of our room so that all kinds of bugs colonized in our room might come and enjoy this horrible feast of death.

When I returned to my room I saw not even a single bug crawling on the floor or crashing themselves to the tube light. I couldn’t even see single dead body of these mighty bugs. I guess these bugs are very intelligent, they saw danger coming their way and “Pathli Gali Se Nikal Gaye!!!”………..Anyways Veeru, you made my job easy, I always tried to beat these bugs out of my room. This was double profit to our Little Dino; this Uppittu cleared all bacteria, fungus by formatting his stomach and also brought Fuggi a lucky charm; he got into SPAN.

Now, whenever Veeru makes horrible stuffs we just think that it’s Bug’s Nightmare and whenever he succeeds in his invention we think its God’s blessings. We all made up our mind with this understanding and we all are now…………

“Living a Peaceful life AGAIN!!.....”

But who knows, whatz cooking in Laddu’s Mind. Will he take on Veeru for beating his record, will he try some new invention which he has learnt in London (Its London, UK)………..Lets see, lets hope for the best…………ONCE AGAIN!!

Veeru, don’t feel down with all this made up story, this was just for fun. Take this as a challenge and prove the bad world (which you referred) that you are not blank and you can fill that blank with a very well crafted sentence containing a bunch of mesmerizing words.

You know one thing the world out there no matter how it is, good or bad, be the way you wanna be and try to see good things around happening you.

Veeru I don’t expect a huge SMS or email from your side, I want to hear a long lasting speech filled with loads of ……..words (Which you are good at) of course from your mouth not from your hands. Coz I know no one can beat you in vocabulary.
